“Come on. We’re taking this baby for a ride.”

Salvatore looked almost like a kid, grinning at our slightly less enthusiastic group. Though a corner of my lips did quirk up.

After a week of back-to-back simulations and lessons on the specifics of the binary system we were now a part of that left us all wiped out, we finally got to fly. Actually fly. Some of our crew had never been to these parts of our star system before, and even I was, I had to admit, eager to take to the skies. I might have spent my teenage years flying around Deva, but our missions went well beyond simple flight lines within the satellite’s atmosphere.

My whole body buzzed under the new and improved wavesuit Salvatore had managed to procure for me. Though maybe that was just the damn appealing visual of the man wreaking havoc on my insides.

We’d barely shared more than a few scorching kisses this entire time thanks to the schedule and oppressive supervision.

I dragged my gaze away from him before anyone noticed I might as well have a holo saying “I want to fuck my captain hard” projected on my forehead.

“All right.” My voice spilled through the hangar. “Let’s do this.”

Oddly enough, not one SCAR Force superior had overruled my, now permanent, co-captaining position. Though I was certain it took a fair amount of arguing from Salvatore to make it happen—part of the reason why we’d kept our hands to ourselves the past week. SCAR Force was no stranger to playing favorites. But they normally only tolerated it when it was them dishing out the favors.

We climbed up the ramp and explored the ship as if it were the first time. As if we hadn’t been familiarized with every aspect of the Tenacious, as Salvatore had renamed it, during our week-long training. But in so many ways, this was new.

At least for the time being, the Tenacious was ours.

True to my sister’s word, the differences between our old ship and this one were hardly worth mentioning. It was bulkier and made to last longer in space with additional supply tanks and extra generators, but that was to be expected since the territory we were to monitor, while focusing on Deva, encompassed all three of Crodone’s natural satellites. It even had the G-force suppressors freshly installed to match the Adamatine.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t snicker at the thought of just how much it must have burned the higher-ups to give out the tech yet again.

At the same time, though, I was grateful. The Adamatine had flown like a beauty, and the crew deserved nothing less.

I eased myself into my copilot’s chair then fired up the controls while Salvatore did the same beside me. A quick glance over my shoulder revealed the rest of the crew were settling in just as well—and where there had been nothing but reservations earlier, I was thrilled to see hints of enthusiasm creeping to the surface.

We were on our own at last.
